I am a freelance artist specialising in cartography for fantasy and sci-fiction roleplaying games. I create maps for commercial games companies as well as for private commissions. The Gallery contains my portfolio of recent work.

If you are interested in commissioning me to create a map for your game please get in touch through the Contact page. If you'd like to know a little more about what commissioning a map entails, please have a look at the Commissions page. My rates are very reasonable, and once you get in touch we can discuss what you require and how to fit it within your budget.

A few more maps

Lots going on behind the scenes but not too much that I've been able to post. I've finished up another map for Kobold Quarterly (actually a map for my home game that turned out to fit the theme of the next issue). Lots of private commissions as well as a map for a book insert for a novel and a little illustration work for the accompanying website. That's all great, but where's the eye-candy? Well a couple of my older maps are now in print and ready to be seen by the world. I'll get them up shortly.

The Ugly Harpy

The Ugly Harpy is a den of vice and iniquity in Mor Aldenn, City of Mages by Headless Hydra Games. It's available on RPGNow in both a booklet with setting details, background on the characters, dice games and more. I've put a preview in the gallery here.

A quiet couple of months

I've been keeping my head down for the past couple of months. A few things I've been working on are starting to see the light of day. First of all Kobold Quarterly 10 is out with an Arabian Inn called the Ruyintan Caravanserai or Sand Dragon Inn. I was really pleased with how that came out. There's lots of mosaic and patterning detail that was a step away from my normal style. I beleive there will be a battlemap scale version of it in the Kobold Quarterly store in due course.

The other big project that is out now is the maps for Open Design's Halls of the Mountain King and the publicly available Zobeck Gazeteer Dwarves of the Ironcrags. I was involved in 12 or so of the maps for these. At battlemap scale of 1 inch to 5' they cover over 25 square feet of map. I hope that explains a little of the silence! The gazeteer map was a fun regional map with heraldry for each of the dwarven Cantons that ended up being used in the text to illustrate the different entries.

Otherwise I'm busy with a couple of large private commissions, some battlemaps for Rite publishing and further refinement on the maptool tilepack.

First reviews for fantastic map - 5 stars, RPGNow

My Fantastic Maps line published on RPGNow with Rite Publishing has picked up a couple of reviews from the staff over at RPGNow. 5 stars for the Leafless Wood and the Ice Temple! The others fared well too. My favourite line from the review:

Jonathan Roberts, is one of those artists that should get billing above the publisher's name. Roberts is the artist of the Fantastic Maps series, a series of maps that have rejuvenated the 2-d map PDF market.

Nathan Collins, RPGNow staff

Thank you to Nathan for such a great review. Lots of interesting comments in there that I'm going to take on board for future maps in the series. First of all, early next week the pdfs will be augmented with a gridded and grid free high res jpg for those using these maps with virtual tabletop software.

In other news, the Kobold Quarterly 10 Map of Fantasy is done and dusted. The Maptool tile pack is now almost done. Lots more projects underway and I'll post more about them when they are done.

More maps added and my first Kobold Quarterly Map of Fantasy

The response to the new site has been great and I've picked up some interesting new commissions. In the meantime other projects have come to fruition. The maps for A Witch's Choice are now up in the battlemaps gallery. They are also available on RPGNow and other One Bookshelf stores. You can also find my work in the most recent edition of Kobold Quarterly. This Map of Fantasy is an isometric view of a bandit's lair. You can also get a printable pdf booklet of the top down version of the map for use as a battlemap
