I was asked to create this map for Kobold Quarterly 15. The article that it accompanies provides advice on adding vertical movement into encounters, and creating fully side on battlemaps. In the example encounter that this illustrates, a drider is climbing the tower to get to the king in the top tower. The players have to stop it by climbing the tower, flying or scaling the stairs inside before the drider beats down the doors on the landing. It was a fun opportunity to take on a more direct illustration of fantasy terrain than the standard top down views. The article has some great ideas for this kind of encounter that should make for a very refreshing change of pace in a game – definitely worth checking out.
