I did some maps for the first Dungeons and Dragons comic – Bad Day. IDW has released a second comic series – this one set in the classic Dark Sun world of Athas. It features the adventures of a gladiator who escapes from the fighting arenas. Here’s a sample (more after the jump):

Tilesets!
Give a man a dungeon and he’ll kill PCs for a day. Give a man the tools to build his own dungeons and he’ll happily be killing PCs for a lifetime. Continue reading “Tilesets!”
Giant’s Meadhall available as a Map Pack!
Winter is coming. When you venture into the snowy north, where giants roam and mammoths stalk the icy plains, you’d best be prepared. The unwary perish in these treacherous snows.
The hall can be used for giants, or as the throne room of the barbarian king, perched on his mammoth-skull throne. A deep pit in the center of the room could be a sabretooth fighting pit, or just a convenient hole to throw unruly adventurers, before their fate is decided.
The Giant’s Meadhall is a map pack designed for use with a virtual tabletop, or to be printed out and used on the table at home.
You can pick up the map pack on RPGNow.

Dark Warriors by OGN
I was approached by the Open Gaming Network about creating a map for their online browser based fantasy role-playing game Dark Warriors. Here’s a low res version of the result:

The map needed to highlight a collection of different towns that the players progress through, Continue reading “Dark Warriors by OGN”
Winter, Kobolds and Beer!
Another Kobold Quarterly has hit the shelves – and with it another colour map. This one resides on the back cover and is the venue for a PC beer run. The complication is that the beer is already in a meadhall, and that meadhall is owned and occupied by giants. With bears.

The meadhall comes with a rickety bridge over an icy river, fire pits, a fighting pit, bear enclosure, mammoth skull throne and, of course, barrels of beer. Everything you could want for a memorable night of beer rustling.
Check out the latest issue of Kobold Quarterly, including a high res version of this map and the adventure that accompanies it, here.
The Great Tree – Yggdrasil with gears
What says norse more than Yggdrasil, the world tree? And what says steampunk more than clockwork gears?
The world tree of Rhune holds the different planes of existence, many of which represent different futures for the world of Midgard. Some represent the triumph of death, others a mechanistic hell and a few where good triumphs. Continue reading “The Great Tree – Yggdrasil with gears”
Enter the Ruins Perilous
Rite Publishing has launched a new project today – the Ruins Perilous. The setting for the project is a seris of ruins used as a testing ground for the Questors’ Society. It’s loosely based in the sandbox setting of Questhaven, but can easily be dropped into any campaign. The twist on this project is that it’s a ransom project. People chip in money, and when the threshold is met, the room is released. Donations of more than $3 will net extra goodies – the high res jpg for the room, a side view illustration, a detailed top down token and more.
Here’s a low res sample of the first room to whet you’re appetite: Continue reading “Enter the Ruins Perilous”

Gather round and hear Tales of the Old Margreve
Open Design has released their latest patronage project – the Tales of the Old Margreve. It’s set deep in an ancient forest of dark happenings and lingering curses.

As the cartographer for the project I’ve just received the final pdf and it’s a beauty. The layout work is fantastic and really reinforces the feel of old eastern European legends and horror. The anthology draws on fairy stories of the old school. Anyone who read the Brother’s Grimm wouldn’t go gaily into the forest looking for elves. This forest is one of ancient power and you disrespect it at your peril. Continue reading “Gather round and hear Tales of the Old Margreve”
D&D #1 Module Edition on Sale
The official first installment of the D&D comic by IDW has hit the shelves and there’s an edition that comes with a module with a nice red cover (reminiscent of some older adventures on purpose I’m sure). There are maps and stats for the various creatures that the characters encounter in the comic. It was fine to be asked to do the maps for this – and here they are.
First off we have the opening location in a bar when a chasm opens in the floor and all sorts of badness comes out, the Staggered Goat:
